Education in Midreshet Sde Boker

Teaching Communities
Each teacher network consists of a unique teaching community in which teachers, ministry of education personnel, and other educators in the specific field share ideas and information.

Each teaching community is comprised of a mailing list - where educators discuss relevant issues, and a website (where educators post lessons plans/teaching ideas, uptodate information from the Ministry of Education appears, polls, forums, links to relevant information on the web, etc. are posted.

Each teaching community is the initiative of experienced teachers in the respective field - teachers who now also work as a part of the Interdisciplinary Education Center on Midreshet Sde Boker.

The first teaching community - "English Teachers Network" - was founded in 1996 and is managed by David Lloyd - david@boker.org.il.

The "Geography Teachers Network" was founded a few years ago by Hannah Sivan - hannah@boker.org.il - who also manages the community.

A new teaching community - "Environmental Education Teachers Network" - is still in the early stages and is managed by Ezra Pimentel - pimentel@boker.org.il.

Zin Elementary School
Founded in 1984 the relatively small community school serves the residents of Midreshet Ben-Gurion and other area residents. The school is influenced by the other educational and academic institutions situated in the Midrasha. The activities of the school include, among other thing, outdoor and other ecological topics. The school has a joint program of surveying the area with the field school.
The teachers are involved in the development of teaching programs concerned with environmental education. Grade 7-8 classes have two study programs which include workshops in the classroom and in the field:

"Turning the Desert into Paradise", which follows David Ben-Gurion's idea regarding the importance of the Negev to country and its people.

"Within thy gates, O Jerusalem", which pointts out the importance of Jerusalem from different aspects.
The school endeavors to create an aesthetic cultural atmosphere, encouraging creativity. The pupils' progress depends on his/her personal pace and quality. Team work is encouraged and pupils cooperate by taking on joint assignments.

Sde Boker Reunion
This site - http://www.sde-boker.org - is dedicated to a time and place that no longer exists. Midreshet Sde Boker of course lives on in new incarnations. What does not exist is the Nativ Angli, the English Language High school. The Nativ Angli allowed English speaking immigrants to matriculate in the Israeli High School. Through the decade of the 1970s more than 300 English speaking young people from around the world gathered on the edge of Wadi Zin in a unique international youth village to attend high school.
