Vice-Premier Shimon Peres said that the state would invest in the Galilee and the Negev instead in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza.

Vice-Premier Shimon Peres said that the state would invest NIS 7 billion in developing the Negev over the next three years. He was making the opening speech at an event at Ben Gurion University of the Negev launching a national strategic plan for developing the Negev. Director generals and deputy director generals from all government ministries, local authority heads in the Negev, businesspeople, and high tech leaders are participating in the conference.

Peres stressed that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Minister of Finance Benjamin Netanyahu fully shared the desire to contribute to development of the Negev and the Galilee.

The government will invest NIS 3.1 billion in railways, Highway 6, and local roads; NIS 1.1 billion in the Bedouin sector, NIS 1 billion in industrial development and new factories, and NIS 1.5 billion in education.

Professional sources said that double that investment was needed to develop the Negev.

Peres also said that he planned to raise more money for the plan by leading a movement to change state budget priorities in 2006.
