Abstract

Project "ELEKTRIDES" is introducing new methodology of revitalization and development of the Cres-Losinj archipelago of Croatia, which is a typical Mediterranean marginal karstic area in decline. Main goals of the Project are:

As the outcome Project should develop a network of family-owned small- and medium-scale enterprises and handicrafts, with emphasis on development of the islands' ecotourism, organic agriculture & eco-food production and different economic activities related to environmental protection including promotion and implementation of combatting soil erosion and desertification technics.

Project is designed by the NGO Eko Liburnia Rijeka and would be implemented in collaboration with the entrepreneurial incubators PLAT-IN Cres/Mali Losinj and PORIN Rijeka, NGO Eco Centre Caput Insulae- Beli, association of farmers and fishermen NATURA Cres, Italian association AIAB and other potential partners from the Mediterranean region (possibly members of the MED Forum).

Project is supported by the local governments of communes of Cres and Mali Losinj and County Primorsko-Goranska, as well as by the few Croatian ministries. Project activities are based on direct contacts with the local population, consisting of lectures & entrepreneurial potential investigation, workshops and study circle. Project duration is 24 months, starting from July 1999 and presentation at the "Combatting Desertification Good Practices Workshop" in Sde Boker, Israel.
